Fremantle Opens Fifth New Older People’s Care Home in Three

From June 28 residents from Lent Rise House in Burnham will move into their brand new home in Marlow, as the new Sir Aubrey Ward House opens .Built on the site of the old home, new Sir Aubrey Ward is a state-of-the-art, 60-room residential and dementia care home. The old home was demolished 19 months ago and residents from there moved to The Heights, High Wycombe.

The new home has four separate houses, or ‘community groups’; one for 10 people, two for 15 people and one for 20 people, which will make living there more intimate and cosy. All of the well proportioned, beautifully decorated personal bedrooms have en suite ‘wet rooms’ comprising shower, toilet and washbasin. Each house has its own sitting room and dining room with kitchenette which also has a domestic size cooker, microwave and toaster so that residents can make snacks and drinks whenever they want to. There are also domestic washing machines in each House, for those residents who want to do a bit of washing themselves. “Fremantle encourages Active Living amongst residents,” said Carole Sawyers, Chief Executive of The Fremantle Trust. “Our staff provide support and help people to do those things which they can no longer do for themselves. However it is extremely important to personal identity, for independence and overall well-being that residents continue to do as much as they can for themselves in the way of daily living tasks, not only for self esteem but to help prevent people from becoming bored. This lovely new building will support our operational objectives,” Carole concluded.

The home has a large communal hall at the entrance, which is the hub of the home, and provides space for community functions. This area also contains a shop/bar/coffee shop and the hairdressers’ room is just off the hall. There is a beautiful, landscaped, courtyard style garden and the two houses on the upper floor have their own balconies so residents can get some fresh air without having to go all the way down to the garden. The main kitchen, in the basement level, provides all main meals and the large commercial laundry room will do the bulk of residents’ laundry.

The new home is an exemplary building, providing a very high quality environment which, apart from being lovely for the people living there, also makes for a better working environment for the staff. Twenty of the rooms in the home are purchased by Buckingham County Council and the other 40 rooms are available privately. The home will open for the admission of new residents from August, in order to give the existing residents from Lent Rise time to settle in.
