Fremantle Home Runner up in Dementia UK Awards

Meadowside care home, in Barnet was named as a runner up at the UK Dementia Care Awards Ceremony in York last week, for the Team of the Year award category. The ceremony was held as part of the Facing the Future Conference, aimed at all those who support people with dementia, the conference had Fiona Phillips as a special guest speaker. The awards recognise excellence and best practice in dementia care services.

Representatives from the dementia care team at Meadowside were at the ceremony and were delighted with the accolade which recognised all their endeavours of recent months. “We have introduced some significant changes to our dementia care unit in the past year, many of which were talked about and acknowledged as best practice during the conference sessions. It is good to know that we are one of the organisations that are leading the way when it comes to providing best possible care for dementia sufferers,” said Vivien Fenton, Dementia Care Manager at Meadowside. “It really made the team feel on top of the world to get this recognition.”

Staff at Meadowside have been focussed on engaging with people rather than simply carrying out the tasks and routines that happen in most residential homes; these still have to get done, but in a 24 hour service and by great teamwork. It’s about making more time for activities and for one to one conversation that is relevant to the person. It’s about looking at the background of the person to get all the information we can to enable us to talk to people about things that are of interest to them. It’s about changing the environment to make it much more homely and not sterile. It’s about using appropriate signage that people will recognise. It’s about putting people first and tasks second.
